Sand Tray Therapy
During the 1930's, sand tray, or sandplay, therapy developed in Europe as the Lowenfield World Technique. Its founder, Margaret Lowenfield, credited a child with bringing small objects into her room over to the tray of sand. She called the sand trays "worlds.” She also noted that sand tray therapy is characteristically a right brain mode. Lowenfield also stated that the production of these worlds seems to be halfway between that of dreams, that are unconscious creation, and art, that draws from the conscious, in the creation of structure and form, and the unconscious in the form of imagery. (Susan Perkins McNally, Ph.D. Sandplay A Sourcebook for Play Therapists 2001).
How Sand Tray Therapy Works
Sand Tray Therapy is a technique which can be used to facilitate healing in adults, adolescents, and children, allowing them to express their thoughts and feelings when words alone are not enough. In addition to its therapeutic use, sand tray can be a tool for personal growth and the development of creativity.
We specialize in therapy and counseling for young adults and children. For any child dealing with ongoing family changes/divorce, trauma, behavioral and social problems at home or school or any other early childhood issues that may need to be addressed, we can help. We offer play therapy for children ages 5 through 12.
Play therapy is a method of meeting and responding to the mental health needs of children and is extensively acknowledged by experts as an effective and suitable intervention in dealing with children’s brain development. It is employed with children aged 3 through 12 and provides a way for them to express their experiences and feelings through a natural, self-guided, self-healing process. Children’s experiences and knowledge are often communicated through play to know and accept themselves and others.

More about the sand therapy process
A Sand Tray Therapist's office is equipped with a specially proportioned sand tray with a blue interior, water and a large collection of miniatures, including human figures, fantasy and folklore figures, animals, buildings, objects from nature, vehicles, and others. The miniatures represent all of the elements of life-the good, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly, the comforting, the frightening, the happy and the sad.
The therapist, who has been specially trained in the use of the sand tray and sandplay techniques, provides an accepting environment in which the client is invited to create a world in the tray using the sand and miniatures.
How Bonnie Can Help
As a therapist, I honor the space while an individual creates their world in the sand tray, then gently ask them to share the story of their world to me.
